Responsibilities and Duties

Conduct/Design/Analysis of Laboratory Experiments75
  1. Independently maintains mouse colony in the animal facility
  2.  Performs animal experiments using mouse models of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and data analysis.
  3. Independently or with minimum supervision, conducts experimental studies or portions of a study by performing animal surgical procedures in the intestine.
  4. Knowledgeable with IACUC and IBC protocols.
  5. Performs in vitro cell culture experiments, including experiments using Caco-2 monolayers.
  6. Perform analysis of animal tissues and samples from in vitro experiments using routine cellular, molecular biology, and protein chemistry procedures.
  7. Proficient in routine lab procedures, including microscopy, histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, ELISA, flow cytometry, Western blot, quantitative PCR, molecular cloning, and siRNA/CRISPR-Cas9 and miRNA.
  8. Familiar with techniques using human and animal samples, including processing and extraction of stool, oral samples, urine, and blood, isolation of organs, tissues, cells, proteins, nucleic acids, and bacteria and small molecules from humans and other biological samples.
  9. Maintains adequate records of samples from mice and humans including stool, oral samples, serum, plasma, urine, tissue, and cataloging and storing those specimens.
  10. Performs computer analysis of data, images and use computer software to prepare data for presentation. Analyzes, interprets, and prepares data summaries of laboratory findings to be used for reports, papers, and presentations at scientific meetings and/or publications in scientific journals.
  11. Manages data curation.
  12. Attends and presents at recurring lab and divisional research meetings, and at national meetings if applicable.
Laboratory Protocols/Regulations and Equipment Coordination15

1. Assists in writing grant applications, abstracts, and scientific papers, as well as outreach communication.
2. Must maintain regular personal contacts with collaborative investigators, assistants, laboratory technicians, students, postdocs and fellows, and collaborators.
3. Track and coordinate maintenance/repair of major equipment and establish maintenance contracts where necessary or advantageous.

Laboratory Management10

1. Trains and supervises staff including students, postdocs and visiting scientists on instruction in correct laboratory procedures and specialized techniques for each research project.
2. Maintains safety records and training and regulatory requirements for proper lab management.
3. Manage scheduling of use of major equipment/facilities
4. Interact with the UNMC IACUC, IBC, and other regulatory bodies to maintain compliance.
5. Presence at inspections by above and execution of any directives to maintain compliance.
