Responsibilities and Duties

Assures all research animals are maintained per CM SOP's.40
  1. Ensures all research animals are maintained according to USDA, AAALAC and UNMC standards.
  2. Monitors and assists husbandry staff to ensure these standards are met. (E)
Directs/manages CM husbandry personnel in the performance of their daily duties.25
  1. Sets husbandry schedules for animal care techs including individual room assignments.
  2. Ensures all daily duties are completed and appropriately logged.
  3. Provides input to Facility Manager and/or Facilities Manager for yearly evaluations. (E)
Ensures all UNMC animal facilities are maintained according to USDA, AAALAC and UNMC standards.15
  1. Ensures all facilities are maintained according to USDA, AAALAC and UNMC standards.
  2. This includes cage washers, tunnel washers and autoclaves.
  3. Trouble shoots when necessary, ensures appropriate maintenance is performed on a scheduled basis. 
  4. Ensures replacement parts and supplies are available. (E)
Maintains adaquate levels of supplies.15
  1. Ensures appropriate levels of feed, bedding, water and operational supplies are maintained at all times.
  2. Places orders/recommends changes as needed to Asst. Director of Operations and/or Business Manager. (E)

 

Works with UNMC researchers and their staff to facilitate animal related research.5
  1. Works closely with UNMC PI’s and their staff in matters related to the health and well-being of their research animals.
  2. Identifies space/housing issues and recommends solutions. (E)

Supervision is available both in person and remotely (e.g., by phone or email), ensuring support is accessible for decision-making, problem-solving, and operational coordination.

  • Provides direct supervision to animal care staff, including assigning daily tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring adherence to established protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Oversees training and development, gives input on performance evaluations, and addresses personnel issues as needed. 
  • May also provide guidance to temporary or student workers and assist in coordinating cross-functional efforts with other Comparative Medicine units.
