Responsibilities and Duties

Patrols University property, including buildings, parking lots and resident halls, on foot, bicycle or vehicles and in all types of weather. Check buildings during and after hours or where security zones have been established for security and safety conditions.

Emergency Situations15X

Respond to a number of emergency situations including medical emergencies, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, suspicious/criminal activity and other related calls for service.

Provide Assistance15X

Assist people with flat tires, locked cars and stalled automobiles. Inform and serve students, faculty, staff and visitors. Conduct personal and money escorts on campus.

Suspicious Activity and Incident Reports10X

Respond to and investigate suspicious activity and compile Incident Reports and other forms as directed.

Direct traffic during peak traffic times and locations.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities


Campus Security Officers perform Public Safety and Security work on the University grounds, in buildings, traffic, and parking control on the campus according to policies and procedures set forth by UNO Department of Public Safety. CSO#s must have high integrity as the job requires honesty and ethical behavior with sensitive information. CSO#s must know and be able to successfully complete Basic First Aid, CPR, AED, and PPCT. CSO#s must possess skills for self-defense, problem solving skills, good communication skills, physically able to perform duties, able to document daily routine and incidents, and general motor vehicle operations to complete required tasks. CSO#s must be a good active listener, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times. CSO#s must be aware of other# reactions and understand why they react as they do, or a good sense of social perceptiveness. CSO#s must be able to talk to others and convey information effectively in intense situations. CSO#s must be able to coordinate well with all members of the University community by adjusting actions in relation to the reactions of others. CSO#s must maintain self-control as the job requires maintaining composure, keeping emotions in check, controlling anger and avoiding aggressive behavior, even in difficult situations. CSO#s must be service oriented by actively looking for ways to help people.


Problem Solving - Decision Making


Campus Security Officers should consider how time-sensitive the problem is. The CSO should be able to weigh the risks of a situation and react quickly and effectively with a solution. CSO#s will find solutions to problems that minimize risks, protect University property and that doesn#t endanger the lives of others. CSO#s must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to issues they are faced with on campus. CSO#s must make sound judgments by considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one. They must understand and be an active learner by understanding the implications of new information for both current and future situations.

The CSO position is a first responder to incidents that occur on Campus. Position aids in maintaining the safety and security of the University community and properties.
