Serve as the primary university staff member responding to student mental health crises. Provide short-term stabilization, risk assessment, and behavioral health consultation. Develop and implement safety plans, and coordinate follow-up care for students in distress. Oversee the university’s crisis intervention protocols and triage systems that ensure effective response and support across all campuses.

Assist with managing referrals to long-term mental health providers, contracted providers and other community-based mental health resources.  Maintain collaborative relationships with community providers (SAFE center, Region 3, Richard Young, Nebraska Collegiate Prevention Alliance (NECPA); South Central Behavioral Health)

Serve a compliance support role related to mental health and student wellbeing, including responsibilities as the University’s Confidential Advisor. Support institutional compliance with federal and state mandates such as the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, Title IX, VAWA, and the Preventing Sexual Violence in Higher Education Act. Chair the CSART Committee.  Coordinate university-wide mental health education and prevention campaigns, awareness initiatives, and training for faculty, staff, and students. Provide safety planning, outreach, and education on wellbeing, violence prevention, and student support resources. Coordinate student health surveys and programs including American College Health/National College Health survey, NECPA (Nebraska Collegiate Prevention Alliance), and the Nebraska Assessment of College Health Behaviors Survey.

Serve as a member of the CARE Team and attend all meetings, serve on the University’s Threat Assessment Team when needed. Provides direction and intervention for students in crisis or concerning events, including with mental health staff, providing victim advocacy, and working with staff and students affected.

Fulfill other duties, which may be assigned by the Director of Counseling.

Ability to execute collaborative programs for student support within a comprehensive plan that addresses students’ changing needs in belonging, wellbeing and academic success supports based on utilization of campus data. Must demonstrate ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of different student populations. Understanding and experience with budgets and management utilizing funding from a variety of sources. Effective communication with faculty, administrators, staff, students, and the general public.

Must be able to prioritize tasks and move between units to address student needs. Able to find creative solutions to solving problems, particularly in fast-moving and fluid situations involving student needs, using diplomacy and tact in identifying proposed solutions. Must be organized and a clear communicator, able to lead teams, and play to staff and student strengths. Innovation in identifying and carrying out creative responses to challenges.

The position directly impacts the operations of the university as far as scope, direction, vision and goals for student enrollment, retention and satisfaction.

This position will interact directly with students, and with other UNK professionals, faculty and staff. This position will also entail working directly and indirectly with community members and other stakeholders. Must maintain information in confidence, using tact and empathy to communicate and carry out policies.

This position receives supervision from the Director of Counseling.
