Provide strategic leadership and oversight for all Residence Life staffing functions, including the recruitment, selection, supervision, training, development, and evaluation of professional, graduate, and student staff. Serve as the direct supervisor of the Associate and Assistant Directors.  Lead department-wide hiring processes for professional and paraprofessional positions, including central office staff, residence hall staff, Resident Advisors (RAs), desk assistants, and student office employees. Oversee comprehensive onboarding, training, assessment, and ongoing professional development initiatives for Residence Life staff. Supervise and mentor professional and graduate-level staff while supporting leadership development opportunities for student employees. Coordinate professional development plans that supports staff growth, engagement, retention, and departmental effectiveness.

Programming and Leadership Development25X

Provide strategic leadership for residential education, and development initiatives that support student success, retention, and community development within the residential environment. Serve as the primary Residence Life liaison to academic and campus partners involved in learning communities, fostering collaborative initiatives that enhance student learning and engagement. Lead the development and implementation of a curriculum-based residential education model aligned with divisional and institutional priorities. Collaborate with campus departments on admissions initiatives, orientation programming, and retention efforts to strengthen the residential student experience and support academic success. With the assistant director, provide leadership and advisement for student leadership organizations including the Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), and the Resident Advisor Advisory Board. Oversee the creation and assessment of departmental learning outcomes, organizational goals, policies, and procedures while guiding strategic planning efforts for the Residence Life department and contributing to divisional and university-wide strategic planning initiatives.

Administrative and Financial25X

Provide management and oversight for all operational areas within the Office of Residence Life, including long-range planning, occupancy management, conference and summer housing programs, assessment initiatives, and business operations for a 2,000-bed residential system. Lead departmental planning efforts related to housing occupancy projections, operational effectiveness, resource allocation, and student experience enhancement.  Oversee financial and business functions within Residence Life, including budget planning, fiscal management, billing processes, and operational procedures, ensuring responsible stewardship of university resources and alignment with institutional goals. Ensure housing data integrity, operational compliance, and reporting accuracy to ensure decisions benefit students.  Oversee Residence Life marketing and communication initiatives that support student recruitment, retention, occupancy management, and engagement goals. Coordinate multi-channel communication strategies for prospective and returning students, including print materials, direct mail, social media, CRM messaging, website content, and promotional campaigns in collaboration with Admissions and University Communications and Marketing.

Discipline and Crisis Intervention10X

Collaborate with Student Conduct to ensure consistent implementation of university policies, student accountability processes, and educational conduct practices within the residential environment. Serve as a senior resource and advisor to Residence Life staff regarding student conduct, behavioral intervention, conflict resolution, and crisis management which can include late night and weekend consultations.  Provide leadership for the development, implementation, and ongoing training related to residential conduct procedures, crisis response protocols, mediation practices, and student support processes. Serve as a member of the university’s CARE Team and oversee residential follow-up efforts related to student well-being, behavioral concerns, and crisis intervention within the residence halls.

Integrates extensive theories and techniques within Student Affairs to achieve results and/ or establish overall strategic directions for the Department of Residence Life. Requires wide-ranging administrative a specialized knowledge of the best practices in student housing and residence education. The Director must demonstrate the ability to apply analysis of data for the administrative and programming activities in the department. The Director must possess knowledge of other offices on campus to build collaborative working relationships across campus.


Problem Solving - Decision Making


When addressing problems or making decision, the Director must be able to devise problem resolutions and make decisions that require interpretation, discretion, and judgment based upon precedent or standard operating policies and procedures that are consistent and fair while keeping the interests of the University in mind. When dealing with crisis situations and emergency response, creativity may be required in dealing with unprecedented or unforeseen activities. Decisions should also encompass long term plans for Residence Life and support the departmental mission.

Actions and decisions exercised by the Director of Residence Life exert broad and continuing impact on the future of Residence Life. The Director exerts a major impact on decisions and final results affecting student housing; and has accountability for financial and program/project objectives and overall successes.
Errors could significantly interrupt business operations, services and potentially both internal and external constituents.


Interactions


The Director will have regular contact with residence life staff, students, parents, and other University faculty and staff. The Director will be responsible for representing and communicating the opinions and viewpoints of the department in different forums. The position will also require providing occasional advice on matters related to resident wellbeing. The Director is responsible for conveying conceptual ideas regarding matters of critical and long-range nature. This position requires diplomacy, timing, and persuasion to gain concurrence or cooperation on operational issues in the face of significant differences of opinion or controversy. The position requires close collaboration with department across the campus and within the Division of Student Affairs.
