Responsibilities and Duties

Collecting unwanted chemicals, researching hazards and disposal60X
  • Collect unwanted or unused chemicals from departments across campus and determine whether materials meet hazardous waste criteria.

  • Identify opportunities to redistribute, reuse, recycle, or properly dispose of chemicals when appropriate.

  • Prepare hazardous waste for shipment to approved disposal facilities, including performing hazardous waste determinations and proper classification.

  • Collect and manage a wide variety of waste materials including (but not limited to) used solvents, solvent-contaminated rags, unwanted paint, aerosol cans (including punctured cans), and similar regulated waste streams.

Maintain compliance with applicable federal and state regulations as well as university-wide policie25X
  • Conduct required weekly and monthly inspections.

  • Maintain and update the Hazardous Materials Manual and the Emergency Plan for the Hazardous Waste Accumulation Area.

  • Maintain and update Facilities Management & Planning (FM&P) Safety Data Sheet (SDS) books and ensure SDS records remain current.

  • Collect, manage, and coordinate disposal of biohazard waste.

  • Collect and prepare universal waste items for shipment, including fluorescent bulbs, ballasts, batteries, and electronic equipment.

  • Package and label hazardous, biohazard, and universal waste in compliance with DOT, EPA, and applicable state regulations.

  • Coordinate and schedule waste shipments with approved vendors; supervise shipments and complete all required documentation and manifests.

Serve as backup for waste/recycling collection on campus.
