Responsibilities and Duties

Implements organization's safety program30

Works with personnel throughout organization to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. May include developing policies, scheduling, and delivering training materials, newsletter, etc., accident investigation to determine cause and recommend steps to prevent them from happening in the future. Recordkeeping of all safety documentation.

Conduct periodic and routine safety audits.25

Including laboratories, shops, and other types of occupancies to detect hazards/risks and/or determine compliance with regulatory requirements/industry standards. Prepare written audit reports and monitor for timely response from campus personnel.  Provide guidance to management to ensure employee safety.

Oversee waste and recycling collection15

Ensure we are applying best practices when collecting campus waste and recycling to meet campus needs.

Oversee Hazardous Waste Collection & Disposal15

Oversee and coordinate with campus departments and 3rd party vendors regarding hazardous waste storage and disposal.

Track Sustainability Efforts10

Work with various departments to ensure sustainability goals are met.

General knowledge of occupational, fire, and laboratory safety standards and regulations. Awareness of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment and techniques. Basic knowledge of good health physics practices. Ability to adhere to established written standard operating procedures. Good communication skills, both oral and written. Basic computer skills, including database applications. Valid Nebraska Driver's License.


Problem Solving - Decision Making


Employee must apply knowledge of regulations/license conditions to assess compliance status of areas audited. This is generally done independently, but in accordance with established written standard operating procedures. Work products are reviewed by Director, Assistant Director, or other management staff prior to finalizing.


Impact


Potential errors may result in uncontrolled hazards that could lead to employee injuries or illness, release of harmful agents to the environment, or physical damage to buildings and structures. Noncompliance can also adversely impact ability to attract external research funds; and may result in issuance of orders from regulatory authorities.

Approximately 60% of the employee's time is spent interacting with others. This includes internal contacts with peers and supervisors. As well as external contacts including the campus community. Purpose of external contact is to provide services, as well as inform individuals in the campus community of regulatory requirements and deviations thereof.
