Responsibilities and Duties

Design, implement, and manage wireless network infrastructure and associated software, including wireless access points, wireless controllers, SSIDs, authentication, and onboarding systems.

Troubleshoot and provide support for the university community in accessing and utilizing wireless network services; including on-call support requirements.  Answer user questions and keep campuses informed regarding changes, incidents, problems, policies, and procedures related to wireless networks.

Monitor and identify capacity and performance issues for wireless networks to ensure continued, uninterrupted operation of wireless network services and desired quality of service.  Prepare and deliver usage and inventory reports as requested.

Develop and maintain wireless network documentation, including user-level documentation.

Assists as necessary in maintaining campus-specific applications, systems or services.

Zone Definition Factors


Knowledge Skills and Abilities


Thorough knowledge of routers and switches, including the ability to diagnose problems and configure devices.  Knowledge of wireless networks and their components and controls.  Knowledge of Windows networking.  Project management experience necessary.  Knowledge of multi-protocols and how they function with TCP/IP.  Knowledge of the overall University network for problem determination and resolution will be expected over time.  Participation in scheduled on-call rotation is required and occasional work outside of normal business hours.  Travel throughout the state of Nebraska is required.  Under the direction of and in partnership with the NU ITS Security team, implement and maintain security strategies, policies, and standards to protect University assets.  Responsible for actively researching and reviewing security practices to make recommendations based on institutional risk and operational impact.  Possession and use of a personal cell phone and plan for business purposes, including on-call responsibilities, is a condition of employment.

Impact


Must be able to develop and maintain procedures and documentation to handle defective components attached to the network that could render the entire statewide network inoperative.  Must be able to ensure that problems are handled in a timely fashion to eliminate unnecessary downtime of equipment/networks.  Errors in judgment are not always immediately detectable and are time consuming and expensive to correct.
