Design, implement, and manage database services, solutions, and software in support of delivering university services.  Monitor and manage performance needs, compute and memory resources, and query design to optimize performance.

Troubleshoot and provide support for the university community in accessing and utilizing database services; including on-call support requirements.  Answer user questions and keep campuses informed regarding changes, incidents, problems, policies, and procedures related to database solutions.

Monitor and identify capacity and performance issues for database solutions to ensure continued, uninterrupted operation of database solutions and associated applications and desired quality of services.  Prepare and delivery usage and inventory reports as requested.

Develop and maintain database documentation, including user-level documentation.

Assists as necessary in maintaining campus-specific applications, systems or services.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities


Provides administration, maintenance, monitoring, and support for enterprise database environments that support university academic, research, and business operations. Performs database installation, configuration, performance tuning, backup and recovery administration, capacity management, and operational support activities. Work requires application of established database administration principles, practices, and procedures to support reliable, secure, and efficient database services. Assignments may involve multiple database platforms, changing technologies, competing priorities, and a 24x7 operational environment. Under the direction of and in partnership with the NU ITS Security team, implement and maintain security strategies, policies, and standards to protect University assets.  Responsible for actively researching and reviewing security practices to make recommendations based on institutional risk and operational impact.


Problem Solving - Decision Making


Identifies, analyzes, and resolves database performance, availability, security, and operational issues using established technical methodologies and professional judgment. Evaluates system performance metrics, resource utilization, and operational trends to recommend improvements. Exercises independent judgment in troubleshooting incidents, implementing routine configuration changes, and resolving technical problems while escalating highly complex or strategic issues when appropriate.

Supports mission-critical database environments that enable university business, academic, and research operations. Reliable database performance is essential for institutional services, regulatory compliance, operational continuity, and end-user productivity. Errors or failures may disrupt applications, delay business processes, impact data availability, or affect service delivery across multiple campuses and departments.


Interactions


Regular interaction with database administrators, system administrators, application administrators, network engineers, vendors, technical support personnel, and university stakeholders. Provides technical guidance and support to users and project teams regarding database services, incidents, performance concerns, and operational procedures. Requires the ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
